The pilot-area in the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Natural Park has begun to be developed in the Public Utility Areas nº 276 “Cuartel del Monte”, owned by the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha, and covered by repopulations of Pinus sylvestris and Pinus uncinata planted in the 1970s, which have not been intervened since they were planted.
Following the contract of technical assistance, work has begun on the drafting of the action project, which will detail the areas of action in accordance with the criteria of good practice defined in the project.
These aim to increase the diversity of the reforestation, promoting mixed stands by favouring beech, rowan, birch and oak trees dispersed within the pine stands, breaking the current homogeneity and continuity, and promoting a mosaic with Mediterranean high mountain grasslands and scrub.
So far, progress has been made in the design of the forest inventory in the upper Veguillas river basin, and the necessary data have been collected to assess the vulnerability to climate change and determine the parameters of the forest structure on which to intervene, as well as to establish the starting point with which to compare in the subsequent monitoring. A detailed topographical survey of the area of action will enable the actions to be defined with great precision.
