En estos meses llegan a su fin las diferentes acciones programadas en los tres territorios estudio de caso del proyecto. En el Parque Natural Sierra Norte de Guadalajara, la redacción de los proyectos arrancó en octubre de 2023, con el primer proyecto para las medidas de adaptación en repoblaciones de pino albar (Pinus sylvestris). En mayo de 2024 se redacta un segundo proyecto para la restauración de pastizales ocupados por repoblaciones de pino negro (Pinus uncinata). La ejecución de los trabajos comenzó en septiembre de 2024, con las claras en la totalidad de las repoblaciones de pinar de P. sylvestris, y cortas en las zonas de P. uncinata que han concluido en la primavera de 2025.

En el Parque Natural dels Ports se ha realizado la acción “Construyendo un paisaje forestal resiliente al cambio climático”, una planificación forestal coordinada entre propietarios públicos y privados, y ejecución de intervenciones silvícolas demostrativas. Se han implicado 8 fincas, 15% del territorio del parque, en las que se han elaborado Instrumentos de Ordenación Forestal (IOF) para cada una de las fincas, que se están aprobando paulatinamente. Para ejemplificar los trabajos identificados en los instrumentos se han seleccionado y ejecutado intervenciones en las dos fincas piloto, en unas 15 hectáreas, tratamientos silvícolas de mejora de los hábitats orientados al fomento de la madurez en bosques de alto valor ecológico, y mejora y recuperación de espacios abiertos.

En la Comunidad Valenciana se ha llevado a cabo la renaturalización de repoblaciones forestales de Pinus pinaster: 28 hectáreas en la provincia de Castellón, 42 en Alicante y 10 en Valencia. Se ha buscado incrementar la heterogeneidad de la repoblación generando claros en un 40% de la superficie, con objetivo último de favorecer la regeneración de Pinus pinaster y permitir la colonización de otras especies, contribuyendo a medio plazo a incrementar la biodiversidad del dosel.

In the Valencian Community, adaptation measures have been implemented on 80 hectares through the renaturalisation of Pinus pinaster reforestation: 28 ha in Castellón, 42 ha in Alicante and 10 ha in Valencia.

The first of the works to be completed was in Barracas, in the province of Castellón, in 2023 and at the end of 2024, the actions in Confrides, in Alicante, were completed. The procedure in both cases has been very similar. The aim has been to increase the heterogeneity of the reforestation by creating clearings in 40% of the area.

These spaces will favour the regeneration of Pinus pinaster and allow the colonisation of other species, contributing in the medium term to increasing the canopy’s biodiversity. Work is expected to begin in the coming weeks in the municipality of Alpuente, in the province of Valencia.

In the Els Ports Natural Park, the action ‘Building a forest landscape resilient to climate change’ is being carried out. This action seeks to implement coordinated forest planning between public and private owners and to carry out demonstrative forestry interventions.

To date, an informative and participatory process has been carried out with owners that has involved a large group of forest owners. A total of eight estates, 15% of the park’s total area, joined the project, including both pilot estates, which receive direct funding from the LIFE project (two estates, some 1,090 hectares), and ‘replica’ estates, with external funding (six estates, some 4,382 hectares).

Forest Management Tools (FMT) have been developed for each estate. The tools have been drawn up and coordinated, and management models have been applied focused on adapting forests to climate change and improving biodiversity. Currently, four of the eight estates have approved FMTs, the rest are in the approval phase. This year, external assistance will be provided to support the owners in the process of processing the IOFs and to create a working group to promote the actions contained in the planning tools in the short and medium term.

Interventions covering some 15 hectares in the two pilot estates have been selected and carried out to exemplify the work planned in the IOFs. The actions, designed according to the conservation forestry model of ecological processes, have consisted of silvicultural treatments to improve habitats aimed at promoting maturity in forests of high ecological value and the improvement and recovery of open spaces.

In this demonstrative case, work is being done to improve the adaptive capacity of a Pinus sylvestris repopulation from the 1970s, and the recovery of mountain pastures of community interest. During 2023, the preliminary analysis and inventory work of the area of action was carried out, which included field visits, a flight with a drone equipped with an RGB camera and LiDAR sensor (June 2023) and the execution of pre-action inventories. Based on the previous analyses, the execution project was drawn up, based on the standard for the design of adaptation actions and the drought vulnerability index developed in the project.

The action projects were developed in two phases: in October 2023, an initial project was drawn up for adaptation measures in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) reforestation, and in May 2024, a second project was developed for the restoration of grasslands occupied by black pine (Pinus uncinata) reforestation.

The execution work began in September 2024 with the improvement of the access road and the opening of main extraction routes. In the last months of 2024, thinning work has been carried out on all the P. sylvestris pine reforestations and logging in approximately 80% of the P. uncinata areas. Due to the onset of winter snowfall, it has been necessary to halt the work, which will resume in the spring of 2025.
