Adaptation measures will be implemented, consisting of ecological restoration in reforestations of Pinus sylvestris and Pinus uncinata, promoting the mixed character of forest habitats and the mosaic with high-mountain Mediterranean grasslands and shrublands.

The selected area is in MUP 276 “Cuartel del Monte,” owned by the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha. Two intervention zones have been delimited: one with a reforestation of Pinus uncinata on juniper scrublands and heathlands habitats (mainly with Cytisus oromediterraneus) and grasslands of community interest, and another with a very dense reforestation on terraces of Pinus sylvestris.

Within the intervention zones, monitoring plots have been established, and precise data has been collected for calculating the vulnerability index (C1) and subsequent ecological monitoring (C6).

Based on the vulnerability index results, with the images of a drone flight specifically conducted, and following the criteria of the standard generated in action C2, the final design of the interventions in the reforestation area has been refined. These interventions will involve thinning the pine forest with different intensities and opening clearings to initiate the recovery of some processes halted by spatial competition and lack of light, promoting the development of companion species, especially beech, oak, rowan, and birch.

The completion of the work is expected in the summer and fall of 2024, as in the winter season machinery access to the area is not possible. The availability of a large extent of public forests represents an opportunity to replicate this forest management model in the forests where the Department of Sustainable Development has direct management competence.
