Final event

Toledo hosted the final event presenting the project results on 19 November, in a session opened by the Director-General for Natural Environment and Biodiversity of the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha. The event was attended by project partners and several guests from the scientific community and public administration. It was organized into three thematic roundtables: one on the transfer of scientific knowledge on climate change to management, another on the forest adaptation measures implemented, and a third dedicated to the barriers or opportunities for replicating these measures in other territories.

Description of Demonstration Cases

Socioeconomic Impact Report

The lack of economic profitability of many adaptation measures, along with difficulties in finding labor or a sufficient business network, are barriers to implementing these actions, especially in highly depopulated areas.

In this report, we analyze in detail the costs and returns of the adaptation measures carried out in the project, and we compare them with the results obtained in other similar LIFE forest adaptation projects, as well as with the costs of ordinary forestry practices.

Complementary to the project manual, several documents provide more detailed information on specific aspects:

Drought Risk Index: provides a detailed explanation of the scientific foundations and the selection of variables that make up the index.
RedBosques_Clima Tool: describes the field sampling protocol and the standardized forms for applying the drought risk index, as well as instructions for using the online tool.
Standard for Designing Adaptation Actions: outlines the criteria agreed upon in the project to ensure that adaptation actions are developed consistently and in line with the philosophy of Ecosystem-based Adaptation.

Manual for Risk Assessment and Forest Adaptation

As the final outcome of the project, we have published Europarc Spain’s Manual No. 15: “Manual for Climate Risk Assessment and Forest Adaptation to Drought. Nature-based solutions for adapting forests to climate change”, which summarizes the tools developed in the project and the results of their practical application in three demonstration cases.

Toledo hosts the final event of the project in November

Next November, we will hold the final event of the project in Toledo, home to one of our partners. It will be an in-person event broadcast online, where we will present the tools generated in the project and the results of the demonstration cases, and discuss the necessary restoration of Spanish forests for adaptation to climate change.

Participation in the final event of the LIFE Adapt-Aleppo project

On 2 July, we participated in the final event of the LIFE Adapt-Aleppo project at the headquarters of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge in Madrid. This project has many points in common with the LIFE Red Bosques Clima Project. It has reached some exciting conclusions and results related to the adaptive management of Aleppo pines and the knowledge of the state of decline of these pine forests.

During the event, Jordi Vayreda, from CREAF, our scientific and technological partner, presented the Vulnerability Indexdeveloped with the LIFE RedBosques_Clima project and participated in the subsequent debate.
