Els Ports Nature Park is one of the pilot areas of the LIFE RedBosques_Clima project. The actions and approaches currently being implemented stem from the previous LIFE RedBosques project, where forest management strategies to increase forest diversity and maturity were tested on a small scale.
The unpredictability of climate change effects, the change in forest productivity and the lack of recognition of the environmental benefits of a biodiverse forest make it difficult for local landowners to incorporate ecological principles in forest management plans. Through a participatory approach, technicians from Els Ports are working with landowners of 8 properties in three different landscape units, building capacity and promoting landscape heterogeneity to reduce the risk of wildfires. Management plans are being developed for each property, including silvicultural practices that reduce climate change vulnerability, prescribed fires and grazing.
