David Sáez, from Fundación Catalunya la Pedrera, highlighted the results of the LIFE Montserrat Project. To prevent large-scale wildfires and increase biodiversity, they implemented green infrastructure in key strategic areas and worked directly with extensive livestock producers.
After evaluating the primary needs of the local livestock farms, they’ve supported them financially, with infrastructure, and technically, with grazing management plans for each farm. The project increased the resilience of the landscape, but also the social fabric of the region: people. Highlighting the multiple environmental benefits shepherds and livestock producers deliver to society, David reinforced the need to recognise their role and attribute them the proper payment for the ecosystem services they provide. “we need the people. We have to pay them the environmental benefits they generate!”
